But at the time, Facebook was the only “startup” we knew about. Since about that time, Caroline and I knew we wanted to be entrepreneurs, to be queens of our castle and make something cool. I actually took a sabbatical and started dancing and found fitness along the way. I was dying for that after just a few short months. That creativity isn't really fostered in the corporate world. But having been a dancer, I was used to stretching my boundaries and thinking outside the box. There are terrific, rigorous training programs at a lot of the big banks you have access to high level mentors, and peers that will be your peers in business for the rest of your life. KJ: Whereas today I think college graduates ask, “What can I start?” when we graduated we thought, “What can we do to build a foundation?” Finance was that foundation. We definitely had that personality-to make something happen. With our generation, there are all these people quitting their corporate jobs and trying something new. JA: Did you guys come out of Harvard with an entrepreneurial spirit? Or did you think, I don't know what I'm going to do, I'm just going to move to New York and figure it out.ĬG: I knew I wanted to do something in fashion, but I didn't know how. But everything happens for a reason and we both have fabulous, supportive families. For both us, it was a very difficult time. Fortunately, we had education to fall back on. CG: We had to keep going and figure something else out.
